Jack Gordon
Jack Gordon is a fine artist and filmmaker based in New York City. His series of large, heavily detailed graphite drawings, depicting biblical scenes and classical subject matter, melds the compositional and narrative traditions of the Old Masters with the technical drama and emotional mechanics of classical cinema.
Gordon approaches art-historical motifs with an originality and sincerity akin to the Old Masters themselves, adapting his commanding graphic style to a well-established visual tradition. His tense biblical compositions recall the dramatic canvases of Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi, while his monochrome medium, which evokes the focused intensity of a spotlight, amplifies their use of chiaroscuro.
His classical subjects carry whispers of the contemporary world, forging a vivid intersection of past and present. While his artistic language feels deeply rooted in art history, the words he speaks belong unmistakably to our present day. The result is a formally studied yet strikingly contemporary body of work.
Jack also manages the Didier Aaron gallery in New York City. His daily proximity to historical masterworks continually refines his practice, while time spent perusing trade shows, auctions, private collections, and the gallery’s sizable library offers a depth of research and exposure rare among contemporary artists.
